Tarek Sabraa

Tarek Sabraa is a scholar of Islamicate history with a focus on the later middle and early modern periods. He specialized in the world of the Mamluks (1250–1517) and their contemporaries by studying their written remains and gained a profound expertise working with so far non-edited manuscripts. Besides intellectual history, biographical studies and the social history in Shām, his other thematic foci are environmental and agricultural history.

He obtained his PhD from Sapienza Università di Roma and held a PhD fellowship at the Center for Advanced Studies “History and Society during the Mamluk Era (1250–1517)” at Bonn University. He previously held research positions at Ghent University, the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO), Leipzig, and currently holds a part-time position at the Sonderforschungsbereich 1385 “Recht und Literatur” at Münster University. He has worked on agricultural information in Mamluk manuscripts as a research assistant with Prof. Dr. Bethany Walker (2014–2016, Bonn University), and on nature- and agriculture-related topics such as water law in Mamluk Egypt and the plague and environmental disasters together with Prof. Dr. Stuart Borsch (Assumption University, MA, USA).
