Di Luo

Di Luo is Chu-Niblack Assistant Professor of Art History and Architectural Studies at Connecticut College.Previously, she worked at New York University Shanghai, Wake Forest University, and the University of Pittsburgh. She holds a PhD and a Master of Architecture from the University of Southern California. Her work focuses on Buddhist architecture in the global context and the application of digital technologies in art historical inquiries, museum and urban studies, and the preservation of cultural heritage. Her recent publications include “Dome of Heaven: From the Lantern Ceiling to the Chinese Wooden Dome” (Oxbow, 2020), “Photogrammetry: A Digital Approach to the Study of Chinese Architecture” (Ars Orientalis 50, 2020), and “The Lost Heritage of China: Dismantling Beijing, Digitizing Beijing” (Bloomsbury, 2021). Since 2014, she has implemented photogrammetry in fieldwork and published more than fifty 3D models on Sketchfab as open access resources to the public. Her digital scholarship has benefited from her background as a trained architect and her previous work experience in architecture design companies in Los Angeles and Beijing. At MPIWG, she was a participant to the image database Working Group “Visualization and Material Cultures of the Heavens” at Department III and will worked on a book manuscript on the Buddhist domes.
