"'How we became what we are'—75 years of the Max Planck Society"

Research Scholar Birgit Kolboske giving a talk on the research program "History of the Max Planck Society (1948-2002)," on gender hierarchies in the Max Planck Society, the Harnack Principle, and work on her latest book Hierarchien. Das Unbehagen der Geschlechter mit dem Harnack-Prinzip: Frauen in der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (2022).

The research program was concerned with the emergence of scientific knowledge and the interaction of research practice with its institutional and social contexts. It developed new perspectives on the relationship between the history of science and contemporary history and treated the history of the Max Planck Society as an important part of the cultural, political, and economic history of the Federal Republic in the context of European and global developments.
