Towards a Systems-Based Historical Science

We are pleased to host Ricardo Fernandes for a lecture on the topic: “Towards a systems-based historical science.”

Ricardo argues that, although there is growing global awareness of major societal and environmental problems—there is much debate on how best to approach these. Ricardo proposes that we can gain actionable knowledge by better understanding the legacies of the past and the historical dynamics of complex human-environmental systems. Ricardo will be describing various theoretical and applied contributions toward the establishment of a systems-based historical science and illustrate their importance using case studies.

Biography

  • Ricardo Fernandes

    Ricardo Fernandes is group leader in Systems Archaeology at the Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology where he also heads the Computational and Radiocarbon laboratories and co-heads the Compound Specific Stable Isotope Analysis laboratory. He is an associate professor in archaeological sciences at Masaryk University and a visiting scholar at Princeton University.

    Ricardo is devoted to the development of a systems-based historical science. His methodological research follows three main themes: Big Historical Data, the development and application of scientific proxies for the study of human-environmental systems, and the design of modelling tools for systems research. Ricardo employs these methods in comparative studies of past and modern societies.
