Polyglot Asian Medicine: Foundational Resources and Digital Tools

This talk introduces a multi-disciplinary collaborative research platform for the history, ecology and clinical use of Asian medicines. "Polyglot" here refers to the ways that Asian medicines traverse not just region and time, but language and different epistemologies and practice communities.  Our website (https://www.polyglotasianmedicine.com/ ) provides resources and tools for researching this multi-lingual spectrum, and organizes them into three main clusters:

  • Digitised, tagged, searchable manuscripts
  • Digitised historical maps of the Bencao materia medica traditions
  • Multi-lingual Drug Name Synonymy

Taken together, these tools and resources can facilitate a new generation of historical and contemporary research on Asian medicines, including modern practice, and new drug discovery.  The data platform is expandable, and open to collaboration.  We are very excited to invite collaboration from scholars in these and other traditions.

In this talk, Michael Stanley-Baker introduces primary features of the Polyglot Asian Medicine database, highlight some novel research insights and teaching uses that have been made possible through the site, and discusses some of the forthcoming research agendas.

About This Series

Brown Bag Lunch is a meeting of researchers at the MPIWG who use or want to learn more about digital research methods, broadly encompassed by the term Digital Humanities. The events are also open to external participants with an interest in digital humanities. In the meetings, researchers can discuss tools, share ideas and experiences (good and bad), and learn from each other. Each session explores a new topic; workshops are usually interactive, and we often invite external speakers.
