Natural Science (Chemical-Technological and Mineralogical-Gemological) Knowledge in Georgian and Eastern Manuscripts Preserved in the Depositories of Georgia

This seminar will highlight a multidisciplinary project on the mineralogical-gemological (historical gemology) and chemical-technological knowledge within Georgian and Eastern manuscripts preserved in depositories in Tbilisi and other regions of Georgia. The seminar will feature two main presentation sessions, one by Dr. Irina Gogonaia and one by Dr. Tamar Abuladze from the Korneli Kekelidze Georgian National Centre of Manuscripts in Tbilisi.

The event organized by Prof. Dr. Dagmar Schäfer (Max Planck Institute for the history of Science, MPIWG) and Dr. Irina Gogonaia (Korneli Kekelidze Georgian National Centre of Manuscripts). The event is funded by the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia (SRNSF) - within the framework of the project (FR_21-620).

    10:10-11:00: Session I: Exploring Georgian Manuscripts: Scientific and Cultural Insights from Historical Texts

    Dr. Irina Gogonaia (in co-authorship with Dr Ia Akhvlediani)

    Part I: Georgian Manuscripts of Chemical Content in the Depositories of Georgia
     > Dr. Irina Gogonaia’s presentation features the Georgian manuscripts with chemical content that are preserved in the depositories of Georgia. This presentation focuses on the examination of these manuscripts, including their chronological framework, typology, and notable examples.

    Part II: Colored Glasses of King Vakhtang and European Baroque Era Imitations of Gemstones
    > This joint work is presented by Dr. Irina Gogonaia (co-author Dr. Ia Akhvlediani) who explores scientific knowledge transition and cultural transfer between the Christian West and Muslim East, as evidenced in the 18th-century Georgian manuscript "The Book of Mixing Oils and Making Chemistry" by Vakhtang VI.

    Dr. Tamar Abuladze (in co-authorship with Dr. Liana Samkurashvili): Persian and Arabic Manuscripts of Chemical and Mineralogical Content in the Repositories of the Georgian National Centre of Manuscripts
     > This joint work is presented by  Dr. Tamar Abuladze (co-author Dr. Liana Samkurashvili) who focuses on the study of Persian and Arabic manuscripts with chemical and mineralogical content that is housed in the Georgian National Centre of Manuscripts.
