Sijia Cheng is a PhD candidate in the Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies at the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” at Heidelberg University. She received her BA in Chinese Language and Literature from Fudan University and MA in Sinology from Heidelberg University. Her ongoing dissertation project concerns a cultural history of animal waste in late imperial China, focusing on multiple uses of excrement as drug ingredient, fertilizer and fuel. She is broadly interested in the history of animals, history of science, technology and medicine, environmental history, and East Asian Studies.
